Time and again we have mentioned the importance of travelling in our various articles. Travelling helps us take a break from our hectic schedule and rejuvenates our senses. In India, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are known for the top Hill Station destination. It gives us a sense of replenishment and connects us to our most true selves. It helps us discover ourselves, our weaknesses, our strengths, and our deepest desires. It helps us to network with people of different lifestyles, languages, thought process and experiences. It helps us become a better version of ourselves.

Located in the northern part of India Uttarakhand was previously known as Uttaranchal. With a variety of numerous Hindu temples located in the state, it is also referred to as ’Devabhumi’ which translates to ’Land of the gods’. The state is crossed by the Himalayas and is popular internationally for its tourism. Due to the Himalayan ranges, there are a lot of places with picturesque views and heart-throbbing locations. With its scenic beauty and amazing vistas, Uttarakhand is bound to take your heart away.

Some of the must-visit places in Uttarakhand are listed below. However, it is not practically possible to put all the beautiful places in a single article. We made a note of a few of them.

Rishikesh:

Situated on the foothills of the Himalayan ranges, Rishikesh is famous for its iconic temples and also the Ganges river. It is also known as the “Gateway to the Garhwal Himalayas” and “Yoga Capital of the World“. It is known for meditation and yoga and people from all around the world come here in search of peace. The best time to visit this place is in March when the annual International yoga festival is hosted for a week. Rishikesh is also known as the Gateway to the Char Dham of Uttarakhand. Ramjhula and The Lakshman Jhula are places that cannot be missed besides the spectacular river Ganga.

Dehradun:

Dehradun is the capital city of Uttarakhand. It is located in the Doon valley of the Himalayan ranges. It is sandwiched between the River Ganga and the River Yamuna. It provides a gateway to the surrounding tourist places and has a slightly moderate climate which is favourable for human existence. Sahastradhara meaning ‘Thousand fold spring‘ is a popular tourist location in Dehradun along with many other places of interest. It is one of the most developed cities in the state of Uttarakhand.

Mussoorie:

35 kilometres away from Dehradun Mussoorie is situated at a height of 6,170ft. It is a hill station and is famous for weekend getaways. With peaceful surroundings and friendly localities, Mussoorie is definitely one of the best places to visit. With serene and cool weather it is pleasant in the other seasons and freezing in the winter. It is a small city with a variety of places to visit which include kempty falls, Municipal garden, Mussoorie Lake, The Mall Road, Lal Tibba, Camel’s back road, Happy Valley and the famous Church of the British times. Mussoorie is popularly and aptly known as ‘The Queen of Hills. By the way, it is my personal favourite place.

Haridwar:

Agar Haridwar is a place famous for the Hindu pilgrimage. According to Hindu mythology, this is the place where the Goddess Ganga descended from the locks of Lord Shiva. It is also known as Gangadwara because this is the place where river Ganga enters the Gangetic plain. It is one of the seven holiest places to Hindus. It is also the place that hosts the iconic and historical Kumbh Mela once one every 12 years. Haridwar presents the beauty of Indian architecture and history in one of it’s best ways in the form of temples. The place is covered with a lot of temples and pilgrims from all over the world come to visit them and attain moksha by taking a dip in the river Ganga.

Nainital:

The judicial capital of the state of Uttarakhand, Nainital is one of the most famous Hill stations in India. It is situated at an altitude of 6,837ft above sea level. The city is situated in a valley containing an eye-shaped lake. Along with the incredibly beautiful mountain ranges which give you a breathtaking view Nainital is also famous for places like Nainital Lake, Naina Peak, Himalaya Darshan & Echo Zone, Hanumangarhi and Pt. G.B. Pant High Altitude Zoo. This is also a famous Honeymoon location.

Badrinath:

Situated at an elevation of 10,800 ft. Badrinath is one of the Char Dham sites. It is famous for its Badrinath Temple. The temple is located in Garhwal in the Chamoli district on the banks of Alaknanda River. Due to its high elevation this place witnesses snowfall in many months of the year. It is a treat to the lovers of nature because this place shows nature in its most vulnerable and true form.

Kedarnath:

One among the Chota Char Dham of the Hindu religion. Kedarnath is located at an altitude of 11,754ft. It is a part of the Himalayan ranges and is well known for the Kedarnath Temple. Situated near Chorabari Glacier, the head of River Mandakini this place witnesses a lot of snow-covered peaks throughout the year. Other than the Kedarnath Temple there is one more temple known as the Bhairava Temple and it is believed that Lord Bhairava protects this town during the months of winter.

Tungnath temple and Chopta:

Tungnath is one of the highest Shiva Temples in the world and is located at a height of 12,073ft. It also means the Lord of Peaks and is rightly said so. Apart from having rich historical and religious importance, Tungnath is also very famous for Trekking. The trek is about 4km long and starts from Chopta which lies at a height of 2,926m(9,600ft). The naturally rich route is something that will leave you awestruck for a while. The view from the top will totally mesmerize you. This trek is a mandatory one if you are a nature lover.

Apart from the aforementioned places, there are many more places that have been less exploited by the modern world and preserve the essence of nature. Uttarakhand is a place with rich natural diversity and a humongous number of mountain ranges. It also has historical and religious importance associated with it. It is one of the most honest preservers of the Indian heritage and the natural beauty of India. If you need a break from your monotonous routine life just pack your bags and take that flight/train to Uttarakhand. Rest assured you’ll have a gala time and as I always say you’ll return back becoming a better version of yourself.
